The Wife of Bath's Prologue

  1. Chaucer criticizes the Church in this prologue by pointing out that although the Bible says there is nothing wrong with a woman having five husbands, society looks down upon that woman for having so many throughout a lifetime. He shows that the Church is going against their own beliefs and that they have too much power and sway over the public; they are making up their own sins.

    1. I agree with Kelly. It is evident that according to society having five husbands is wrong and unacceptable, but the bible makes it seem as if it is okay. Chaucer clearly disagrees with the church and he does not approve of the power they have.

  2. Satire is used when the wife of bath tells about how she loved to drive her fourth husband crazy. When her fifth husband begins to be mean to her and hit her it could be seen as a sort of "justice" at the time because of her being such an awful wife to the four other men. Chaucer is trying to satirize marriage at the time and what was expected because the wife of bath does the complete opposite.

    1. I agree with you Jackie. Chaucer is criticizing marriage by having the story be about a woman who has married five times. It shows that he does not like marriage by portraying ones that failed and are not the way people imagine marriages to be.

  4. Chaucer sort of justifies using violence as the answer in this prologue. At the end, it says he hit her so hard and then felt guilty, so they never fought again, and seems as though they lived happily ever after. It makes it sound like at this time period, violence was an okay thing and could end up solving a couple's problems.
